Mission & Role
Our Mission
The NCCR-TTF-DDG (NCCR Evolving Language Transversal Task Force Digital Data Generation) serves as the technical backbone for all computer-based research activities within the NCCR Evolving Language project.
Core Responsibilities
1. Technical Support & Implementation
We provide comprehensive support for implementing all computer-based tasks across work packages, including:
- Task design and development
- System architecture consultation
- Technical troubleshooting and optimization
- Cross-platform deployment
2. Task Library Development
We are developing and maintaining a comprehensive library of tasks that enables work packages to:
- View existing tasks and their implementations
- Edit and customize tasks for specific research needs
- Share tasks and methodologies across different work packages
- Collaborate on common technical challenges
3. Modernization & Quality Assurance
A key aspect of our work involves upgrading and modernizing existing systems:
- Migrating legacy code to modern frameworks
- Implementing dependency management and build systems
- Establishing unit testing and quality metrics
- Ensuring reliability across platforms (web, tablets, desktop)
4. Cross-Package Facilitation
We serve as a bridge between different work packages, enabling:
- Standardization of technical approaches
- Knowledge sharing and best practices
- Reusable components and systems
- Coordinated technical infrastructure
Strategic Focus Areas
The TTF-DDG work is currently structured around two main strategic projects:
Primary Axis 1: Library of Tasks
A centralized platform accessible via subdomain that serves as the repository for all task implementations, enabling efficient collaboration and reuse.
Primary Axis 2: ASR Collection
Development of a human-centered Automatic Speech Recognition system tailored to the specific needs of NCCR work packages, addressing critical requirements in language research.
Working Approach
Our methodology emphasizes:
- Reliability: Implementing comprehensive testing and quality assurance
- Modernization: Upgrading systems to use current best practices
- Collaboration: Working closely with PIs and researchers across work packages
- Documentation: Maintaining clear technical documentation for all systems
- Sustainability: Building systems that are maintainable and scalable
Impact
Through our work, we aim to:
- Accelerate research by providing robust technical infrastructure
- Enable reproducibility through standardized task implementations
- Facilitate collaboration across work packages
- Ensure long-term sustainability of research software
- Bridge the gap between research needs and technical implementation
History
The TTF-DDG was established at the end of 2024 in response to the growing need for coordinated technical support across the NCCR Evolving Language project. Since its inception, we have rapidly expanded our portfolio of supported tasks and modernization efforts.
